I feel like smiling

Happy World Vegan Day everyone!

What a better way to celebrate this very special day than with some photos of the gorgeous creatures that share this world with us. If you’re a usual reader of this blog you know how much veganism has impacted my life. Today is all about the cutie pies so I won’t keep you, but I definitely wanted to say how grateful I am for this beautiful movement which has filled my life in such an incredible way. I’m so grateful that I read and saw the tough images that made me make this change, and I’m so grateful to the animals that share and have shared my life with me and have filled my heart with joy even in the darkest moments. From the moment I started eating and living this way, I have felt a sense of freedom inside me that is so hard to explain. Not freedom from problems and sadness, but in spite of it, it’s a feeling that has stayed with me since day one, it’s the one I see in my dog when she’s running in the snow (her absolute favorite thing to do), and the freedom you see in the eyes of the lucky animals who have been rescued and now roam animal sanctuaries across the globe. May there be freedom for all creatures some day, for there is no greater feeling in the world, for them, or for us.

Happy world vegan day! Ready for a cutie pie love fest?

DO YOU FEEL LIKE SMILING? – September 8, 2013

Animal place farm sanctuary photo by marji beach

The weather seems to be slowly shifting into fall in Madrid. My favorite season will be here soon, and the colors alone make me want to smile. If that doesn’t do it for you, how about this adorable set of photos by Marji Beach, where Sophie, Susie, Owen and Patty take on an autumn pumpkin at Animal Place farm sanctuary! Owen (below) seems to have his head in the game. Patty on the other hand seems to have found an easier approach to enjoying her dinner! I love seeing them free, safe, and only concerned about one thing… ‘how the h… do you open a pumpkin?!’

The three photos were taken by Marji Beach, a worker at Animal Place Farm Sanctuary, and are part of a whole series showcasing everything that happened when this pumpkin arrived. Check it out and have some laughs by clicking her name and visiting her Flickr account. She takes such beautiful pictures!

DO YOU FEEL LIKE SMILING? – August 22, 2013

Dog smelling the breeze

Today’s dose of smiles comes to you thanks to Verena, our in house expert and fellow blogger on meditation, mental health and wellness. When she sent this to me, I told her I simply had to add it to our ‘I feel like smiling’ page immediately. The smile on my face after seeing what I’m about to show you lasted for hours. The article is in Portuguese, but don’t worry if you don’t understand the language, the pictures say it all! To give you a hint, our cocker spaniel Nala (top photo) is illustrating what you’re about to see: Smile!

Dog and the sea

I bet you can smell that sea breeze by just looking at this photo. One of my favorites by Christian Tan. A dog, its person, and the sea.

Do you feel like smiling? Our little tribute to farm sanctuaries everywhere

Today I’m paying a little tribute to farm sanctuaries across the globe with these incredible photos by Marji Beach taken at Animal Place Sanctuary. In many cities across the world, animal advocates are creating safe havens for farm animals who by chance, luck and non stop activism were rescued from slaughter or situations of abuse and neglect. These guys are our most forgotten animals, but they are just as worthy, wonderful, willful and kind as the companion animals we know and love. Thank God for animal sanctuaries and the incredible workers that dedicate their lives to the animals. I’m so incredibly grateful. I don’t know about you, but looking at these photos that just scream freedom make me think of how horrible these guys had it before and it just makes me smile ear to ear to see them sunbathing, grazing and nose smooching. Yeah, that’s right, take a look at Ben the pig hard at work (top photo), Elsa and Nicholas (first photo below) and Elsa and Chester (second photo below)  feeling the love.

To wrap up this love fest and very brief tribute (I could spend days talking about places like these), I leave you with Mr. Bob Dylan. If you can, listen to the song here, while you read part of the lyrics below. Was Bob thinking about Ben and his pals when he wrote this? What do you think?

I was in another lifetime one of toil and blood
When blackness was a virtue and the road was full of mud
I came in from the wilderness a creature void of form
“Come in” she said
“I’ll give you shelter from the storm”.

And if I pass this way again you can rest assured
I’ll always do my best for her on that I give my word
In a world of steel-eyed death and men who are fighting to be warm
“Come in” she said
“I’ll give you shelter from the storm”.

Not a word was spoke between us there was little risk involved
Everything up to that point had been left unresolved
Try imagining a place where it’s always safe and warm
“Come in” she said
“I’ll give you shelter from the storm”.

– Bob Dylan

DO YOU FEEL LIKE SMILING? – April 22, 2013

Tiny weekly bursts filled with reasons to smile @ Little Green Kettle

A big cow smooch just for you, plus some gorgeous sunbathers below at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Utah. Can’t you just feel the rays? Little reasons to smile at Little Green Kettle

I don’t know about you, but very few people can get me smiling like Steve Martin can. Top that off with the sound of a banjo (and Steve is a wizard at the banjo) and the grin will certainly grow. Come to think of it, I already told you last week that Paul Simon did the trick as well. Hmmm… what to choose? What to choose? I simply had to go with all three. Please excuse the quality of the video, but I thought it was too much of a gem to pass up.

Do you have 3 minutes to watch this heart melting animated short? Ah, the lengths we go to to follow our dreams. Meet Kiwi!

Are you smiling yet?

Let’s toot the horn for:

David Wild from Public Energy for his adorable cow close up.

Heather Culligan for her horses relaxing in the sun photo

DO YOU FEEL LIKE SMILING? – April 13, 2013

I feel like smiling When Little Green Kettle was created, the three pages ‘I feel like reading’, ‘I feel like watching’ and this one, ‘I feel like smiling’, where under construction while I was getting all the content ready. Visitors were pouring in to read our posts and make some of our recipes, but these babies were still in the oven. In spite of this, this little page ‘I feel like smiling’, which only had the phrase ‘Coming soon’ was one of THE most visited pages on the site. There’s no doubt in my mind that we all want to smile, laugh and be giddy, especially when the world seems to have gone a little kooky on our watch.

Children laughing

This page will be constantly updated by me and was created for two reasons, 1- to put a smile on your face and maybe a laugh in your belly so that you can start your day on a positive note, be kinder to others and remember that joy is not overrated, and 2- to pay tribute to the beautiful creatures that roam the Earth (human and non human of course!). It will be a very simple page that will be changing constantly, it will have pictures or video, and always a bit of music. What is happiness without music after all?

pigs rescued at animal sanctuary

These gorgeous pigs are now living at the Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary in Maryland. Could they be happier? Remember what it was like to play with mud as a kid?

We’re going Old School today with Paul Simon and Chevy Chase. This song ALWAYS puts a smile on my face. I’m a rocker girl at heart, but Paul Simon was always considered ‘The Man of the House’ when I was growing up. Gotta love him!

Let’s toot the horn for:

Roy Montgomery for his boy and lizard portrait.

Kevinschoenmakers for his photo of children laughing awaiting their lunch in China.
