I’m so excited to start our Rockstar series off with the person that started me on my journey. Words cannot express the road this gal was carving out for me from the moment I took out my credit card to pay for her book The Kind Diet back in 2009. I share part of this story in our post From Meat Eater to Vegan and Everything in Between in case you missed it. Today however, I’m not sharing my story per se, I’m sharing the work of this amazing rockstar with you. Why is she a rockstar in my eyes? Not only did she completely influence my teen years with her portrayal of Cher in the movie Clueless (one of the absolute cult classics of my generation, a hip revival of the novel Emma by Jane Austen), but she is THE kindest protector and advocate for animals and a healthy lifestyle. In the year 2009, after many years of being vegan herself, she wrote the very compelling book The Kind Diet. Possibly the best $30 I’ve ever spent on a book. Her wise words and comforting stories, not to mention her thoroughly researched segments on health and the horrors of factory farming simply changed my life.
In spite of having such strong information to tell, she does it with such poise and respect for the reader that it makes you connect with her and her story in a very special way. You simply come out as a different person by the time you put it down. I’ve read many books on veganism and the serious effects the meat, dairy and egg industries have on the animals, our health and the environment, but I must say that this is one of those books I keep coming back to again and again. Not only does it address the multiple reasons for the ‘Why vegan’ but it gives us a super simple easy to follow guide to the ‘How vegan’. Every single piece of information in this book is backed up by the scientific studies behind it, and the nutritional information has been overseen by none other than Dr. Neal Barnard M.D. one of the leading experts in the field of nutrition in the US (a rockstar in his own right who we’ll be featuring in the Little Green Kettle really soon).
The book is both informative and personal, Alicia’s own story will inspire you and she seriously leaves no stone unturned in this book. She covers everything from what to eat to how to cook it. From what to do in social situations and while travelling, how to deal with family and friends. She talks about the practical aspects of shopping for the food and eating the healthiest way possible, and of course talks about our beautiful animals and the pain and suffering we’re putting them through on a regular basis with the products we vote for with our dollars. If there’s one book to start you on the veggie path it’s this one. She doesn’t leave it at that though, she continues to help people make healthy choices daily by being with you 24/7 in her online community The Kind Life. This website is constantly being updated with interesting information, recipes, product recommendations, cooking demonstrations and more. It even has a book club! Oh yeah, awesome as she is, Alicia made this community completely free. No monthly fees or membership. It’s there for you 24 hours a day.

– Azuki beans, a glorious pressed salad, her incredible magical healing soup, and countless others. Did I mention these are only the ones I’ve personally tried? It doesn’t even cover half of the recipes in this book. Not to mention the simple suggestions on how to put everything together and how to take the vegan lifestyle to where you feel the most comfortable. The book is filled with beautiful stories of Alicia’s own journey, not to mention incredible photos throughout the book.
Enough about me yammering on for hours about this incredible book and activist. Why not hear about it from the author herself?! Here’s a great quirky and very friendly presentation and Q&A with Alicia Silverstone when she presented her book at the offices of Google. I love how open and friendly she is and how she explains what this book is all about to perfection and with her usual candor and compassion. Not to mention a few good laughs when she gets over excited and loses her train of thought. We just love her!
Here are some more links for our Number one rockstar Alicia Silverstone including where to buy her book, her fabulous website, twitter and some public speaking videos.
Last but not least, THANK YOU Alicia, for all the wonderful work that you do and for helping so many of us make the change. You rock!
Her book is also available in most bookstores, Amazon UK, Amazon Spain, and in its iBook version.
The beautiful photos in this post are from the book The Kind Diet and were taken by Victoria Pearson. Just a sneak peek into some of the amazing photos that fill the pages of this book. From recipes, to a day in the life of Alicia, and of course our amazing animals.
